Why book through Orbit

Check the badge

Anyone you pay for driving lessons must be a DVSA-approved instructor or a trainee, and must display a green or pink badge in the windscreen. Instructors add their own ADI details to Orbit, so check the badge at your first lesson.

Real-time availability

See when instructors are actually free, not just a contact form. Availability updates as lessons are booked, so you always see current slots.

Secure card payments

Pay by card at the moment of booking. Stripe handles the payment end-to-end so your card details never touch an instructor's phone or an instructor's spreadsheet.

Compare before you commit

View prices, pass rates, transmission types, and coverage areas side by side. Make an informed choice rather than picking the first result.

Instant online booking

Book and pay for lessons 24/7 through your instructor's booking page. No waiting for callbacks or playing phone tag.

Track your progress

Follow the official DVSA syllabus, track competency scores, and see your journey from first lesson to test day in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about finding and booking driving lessons.

Driving lesson prices vary by region, from around £26 per hour in the North East to £48 per hour in London. The national average is approximately £30–£40 per hour for manual lessons, with automatic lessons costing 10–15% more. Block booking discounts of 10–15% are common when you pay for 10+ lessons upfront. See our full cost breakdown at orbitdriving.com/driving-lessons/cost.

On Orbit, search for instructors by entering your postcode or town. Browse profiles to compare prices, availability, and transmission type. When you find an instructor you like, select a time slot and book directly through their page. You can pay online or arrange payment with your instructor — no phone calls needed.

There’s no minimum number of lessons you must have or hours you must practise, according to GOV.UK. How many you need depends on how quickly you learn and how often you can practise between lessons. Your instructor will give you an honest assessment of your progress and let you know when you’re approaching test standard, and the DVSA’s Ready to Pass checklist (readytopass.campaign.gov.uk) sets out the signs you’re ready.

Manual lessons teach you to drive a car with a gearstick and clutch pedal, while automatic lessons use a car that changes gears for you. Automatic lessons are typically easier to learn and often require fewer hours to reach test standard. However, passing in an automatic means your licence only covers automatic vehicles. A manual licence lets you drive both. Around 40% of new learners now choose automatic.

Enter your postcode or town on Orbit’s instructor search page. You’ll see instructors who cover your area, with their prices, availability, and transmission type shown upfront. You can filter by automatic or manual, and by gender preference. Instructors add their own ADI details, so check their green badge (or pink badge for a trainee) at your first lesson. You can also search GOV.UK’s find a driving instructor service, though ADIs choose whether to be listed there.
