Hazard perception, scored like the real test

Hazard perception is the other part of your theory test, and you have to pass both. With Theory Premium, practise on DVSA CGI clips scored the way the test scores them: up to 5 points a hazard, fewer the longer you wait.

Questions

What learners ask before they start

You can start free with no card and nothing to install. Want to see the questions first? The 10-question taster quiz needs no account.

Is there a free theory test app?

Yes. Orbit's free account gives you 10 practice questions every day, written by Orbit, by topic across all 14 theory test topics, with an explanation after every answer. It runs in your browser, so there is nothing to install, and you get a theory readiness score from 0 to 100 that shows your weakest topics. No card needed, and the 10-question taster quiz needs no account at all.

What does Theory Premium add?

Theory Premium is £2.99 a month and includes the DVSA revision question bank. You get unlimited practice from it, and full 50-question mock tests drawn from it. On top of that come the 49 DVSA hazard perception clips, and progress tracking that shows your accuracy in each of the 14 topics, weakest first, with your mock test history.

Where do the questions come from?

Free practice uses original questions written by Orbit, aligned with the DVSA theory test syllabus. Theory Premium includes the DVSA revision question bank, and your unlimited practice and mock tests are drawn from it.

How many questions are in the theory test, and what is the pass mark?

The multiple-choice part has 50 questions in 57 minutes, and the pass mark is 43. The hazard perception part has 14 video clips with 15 developing hazards, scored out of 75, and the pass mark is 44. You need to pass both parts to pass the test. The car theory test costs £23.

Pass marks on GOV.UK
How close is the mock test to the real theory test?

Each mock has 50 questions drawn at random from all topics of the DVSA revision question bank, a 57-minute timer and a pass mark of 43. That is the same format as the multiple-choice part of the real test. When you finish, you can review every question: your answer, the correct one and the explanation. Mock tests come with Theory Premium.

What are the hazard perception clips?

49 DVSA CGI hazard perception clips in Theory Premium, reproduced with DVSA's permission. They are scored like the real test: up to 5 points per hazard, and the earlier you respond, the more you score. Click too often or in a pattern and the clip scores zero, as it would on the day. After each attempt you see your clicks against the scoring window and what the hazard was, and 10 of the clips also have a solution replay.

Theory test rules on GOV.UK
How long should I revise before booking my theory test?

There is no set number of weeks: it depends on what you already know and how often you practise. Your scores are a better guide than the calendar. Book once your mock tests clear 43 out of 50 and you are spotting hazards early on the clips. On the free account, your readiness score and weakest topics show where you stand. Each attempt costs £23, so waiting a week is cheaper than sitting it twice.

Does it work on my phone, and can I cancel?

Yes, and yes. Orbit runs in the browser on any phone, tablet or laptop, so there is nothing to install. Premium is bought on the Orbit website, not in an app. It renews monthly until you cancel in your account, with no minimum term, and you keep access to the end of the month you have paid for. There is no free trial, so start on the free account to see if it suits you.

Do I need a driving instructor?

No. Anyone can sign up with a name, email and password, or with Google or Apple where available. If your instructor runs their diary on Orbit, they can see your theory readiness and accuracy by topic on your pupil record, matched by your email address.

Is Orbit part of the DVSA?

No. Orbit is independent. It is not part of the DVSA and is not endorsed by DVSA. The free questions are written by Orbit. Theory Premium includes the DVSA revision question bank and the 49 hazard perception clips, reproduced with DVSA's permission.
