Driving Instructors in Belfast

Belfast's Westlink, the Sydenham bypass, and urban streets from the Cave Hill area to the Ormeau Road give learners a wide mix of roads. The city's road network combines dual carriageways with narrow residential streets across distinct neighbourhoods. Note that driving tests in Northern Ireland are run by the DVA rather than the DVSA, and Graduated Driver Licensing rules apply to learners from 1 October 2026.

Driving lessons in Belfast: your questions answered

Driving lessons in Belfast typically cost between £26 and £30 per hour. Many instructors offer block booking packages with additional savings.

Belfast has two DVA driving test centres that run car tests: Belfast on Balmoral Road (BT12) and Hydebank on Hospital Road (BT8). Your instructor can advise which centre suits your location and the routes you have practised.

The practical driving test in Northern Ireland is run by the DVA (Driver & Vehicle Agency) rather than the DVSA. From 1 October 2026, Graduated Driver Licensing adds a six-month minimum learning period and a logbook for new learners, and a new-style test follows from 1 April 2027.

Under Graduated Driver Licensing, which starts on 1 October 2026, new drivers display R plates for two years instead of one. Drivers already on R plates, and people who held a provisional licence before 1 October and pass within six months, stay on the old 12-month period. See our guide to Northern Ireland's graduated driver licensing for the full rules.
