Frequently asked questions
Is Orbit really free for instructors?
Yes. Orbit is free for driving instructors and trainee instructors. There is no subscription, no trial and no card needed, and every feature is included: diary, booking page, card payments, pupil records, Making Tax Digital (HMRC production approval in progress), CPD and Standards Check tools, and AI lesson debriefs.
How does Orbit make money?
A booking fee is added to lessons booked or paid online through the app, paid by the learner: the greater of £2.99 or 4% of the lesson subtotal. It's added on top of your price, never deducted from your payout. We also sell optional extras: marketplace introductions and lead credits.
How much is the learner booking fee?
The greater of £2.99 or 4% of the lesson subtotal. A £40 lesson has a £2.99 booking fee (4% would be £1.60, so the £2.99 minimum applies). A £200 lesson block has an £8 fee. The learner sees the fee as a separate line before they confirm payment.
When does the booking fee apply?
On lessons booked or paid online through the app: the public booking page and payments in the pupil portal. Lessons taken from an already-paid block are not charged a second fee.
How do card payments work?
Each instructor connects their own Stripe account at onboarding. Pupils pay by card when they book online, and payouts go directly from Stripe to your bank account, usually the next business day. You receive your full lesson price; the booking fee is added on top for the learner.
What are the optional extras?
Marketplace introductions: when a new pupil finds you through the Orbit marketplace, a one-off £30 finder's fee is taken from their first booking. There's no charge for repeat lessons with the same pupil. Lead credits: buy a pack when you want to unlock learner enquiries near you. Both are optional.
What about trainee instructors (PDIs)?
Trainee driving instructors (PDIs) use Orbit free during training, and it stays free after you qualify.
Do you offer accounts for driving schools?
Yes. School accounts start at £8 per seat per month and add team management, multi-instructor diaries, consolidated reporting and centralised billing. Contact us for a quote if you run a school with more than 3 instructors.
Are there any contracts?
No. There is no subscription and no contract. Your data is yours, and you can export it at any time.
