Why choose automatic lessons in Horwich?

Automatic car tests across Great Britain have risen every year since 2020/21. Here is why learners in Greater Manchester choose them.

Easier to learn

Two pedals instead of three. No clutch coordination or gear selection means your lessons focus on road awareness and positioning from the start.

A growing choice

DVSA figures show automatic car tests in Great Britain rose from 242,713 in 2021/22 to 589,483 in 2025/26, nearly 3 in 10 of all car tests.

Electric cars are automatic

DVSA classes electric cars as automatic. New petrol and diesel cars are being phased out from 2030, and all new cars must be zero emission from 2035.

No clutch to stall

With no clutch pedal, there is no stalling from a mistimed clutch at junctions or on hills. That takes away a common worry for new drivers in busy areas like Horwich.

Learn at your pace

There is no minimum number of lessons or practice hours for the driving test. How many you need depends on how quickly you learn.

Licence implications

An automatic pass restricts you to automatic cars. You can upgrade later by passing a test in a manual car, so it is worth thinking about the cars you are likely to drive.

Automatic driving lessons in Horwich: your questions answered

Orbit's guide price for driving lessons in Greater Manchester is £34–£40 per hour. Each instructor sets their own rate, and some charge more for automatic lessons, so compare instructors in Horwich before you book.

Automatic cars remove clutch and gear coordination, so you can focus on road awareness, positioning, and hazard perception from your very first lesson. Pass rates are a different matter: DVSA reports a 44.6% pass rate for automatic car tests in 2025/26, against 50.0% for all car tests.

No. Passing your test in an automatic restricts your licence to automatic cars. However, DVSA classes electric cars as automatic, and more than 1 in 4 new cars sold are now electric, so an automatic-only licence is increasingly practical.
